Boudoir Isn’t About Sex: What Boudoir Actually Is (And Why it Matters)

But let's get something out of the way right now: Boudoir can be sexy. It can be flirty. It can be suggestive. It can be downright hot as hell.

But boudoir photography isn't inherently about sex. That's actually one of the biggest misconceptions I want to address right away. Because when someone tells me they've been thinking about doing a boudoir session but they're nervous about it, one of the first things I hear is:

"I'm just not sure I want to take sexy pictures."

And I get it.

The word boudoir can conjure up a very specific image: lingerie, heels, dim lighting, pouty lips, and someone trying to look sexy for somebody else.

But that's not what I do. What I do is empowerment photography.

I photograph people who want to see themselves differently, feel beautiful, and celebrate their bodies.

Sometimes that happens while wearing lingerie. Sometimes it happens in an oversized sweater. Sometimes it's leather, fishnets, tattoos, messy hair, and your favorite band blasting in the background. Sometimes it's soft and romantic. Sometimes it's weird as fuck.

And sometimes it's all of the above.

That's boudoir to me.

So...What is Boudoir Photography?

At its simplest, boudoir photography is an intimate style of portrait photography that celebrates a person's body, personality, confidence, and self-expression.

The word "boudoir" comes from the French term for a private dressing room or bedroom, which is where the more intimate, personal nature can come from.

But modern boudoir photography has evolved far beyond one particular aesthetic.

Boudoir can be:

  • sensual

  • playful

  • romantic

  • emotional

  • vulnerable

  • dramatic

  • alternative

  • moody

  • soft

  • weird

  • badass

  • completely fucking unapologetic

There isn't one correct way to do it.

And there sure as hell isn't one correct body, gender, relationship status, sexuality, age, or personality for boudoir. Boudoir is simply about you.

Not some imaginary version of you that exists after you've lost 20 pounds, grown out your hair, gotten rid of your stretch marks, or finally decided you're "photogenic enough."

You. Right now.

Is Boudoir Photography Sexual?

It can be, but it doesn't have to be. This is probably the most important distinction I can make about boudoir.

Sexy and sexual aren't necessarily the same thing. You can feel sexy without creating images that are explicitly sexual. You can wear lingerie without the photographs being about sex. You can pose in a way that makes you feel powerful without trying to look desirable to someone else.

And you can absolutely have a boudoir session that has nothing to do with a partner.

Single, married, dating, or happily alone, none of that determines whether boudoir is for you.

Your session belongs to you.

The Meaning of Boudoir Is Bigger Than "Sexy Pictures"

When someone asks me what exactly boudoir means, I don't immediately think about lingerie. I think about ownership. Of your body, your identity, your story, and the way you see yourself.

Because here's the thing: We're constantly being told what we're supposed to look like.

Too fat. Too thin. Too old. Too young. Too masculine. Too feminine. Too much. Not enough. Smooth your skin. Hide your scars. Cover your stretch marks. Fix your cellulite. Wear this. Don't wear that. Smile more. Be smaller. Take up less space.

It never ends. And you know what I say to it?

Fuck that.

Your body doesn't exist to be aesthetically pleasing to everybody else. Your boudoir photos shouldn’t either.

Boudoir is About Seeing Yourself Through a Different Lens

One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is watching someone's expression change when they see their images for the first time.

There's usually a moment. A pause. A little disbelief.

"Wait...that's me?"

And I fucking love that moment.

Because sometimes you don't need another person to tell you that you're beautiful. You just need a little evidence that you can see for yourself. That's where empowerment photography comes in.

I'm not trying to transform you into somebody else or Photoshop you into an impossible version of yourself. I'm just creating images that help you see what I see:

  • Your strength.

  • Your softness.

  • Your confidence.

  • Your weirdness.

  • Your curves.

  • Your scars.

  • Your tattoos.

  • Your laugh.

  • Your fucking spark.

You Don't Have to Feel Confident to Book a Boudoir Session

This one is important. You do not need to be confident before you book boudoir.

In fact, I would argue that confidence is often something you build through the experience.

If you walked into my studio already feeling like an absolute goddess, amazing. I will happily photograph the shit out of that confidence. But if you're standing in front of your closet thinking: "There is absolutely no fucking way I can do this." Come anyway.

You don't have to know how to pose. You don't have to know what to do with your hands. You don't have to know your "good side." You don't need modeling experience.

That's my job. I'll guide you through posing, movement, facial expressions, and everything else so you never have to stand there wondering what the hell you're supposed to do.

Your only job?

Show up. I'll handle the rest.

What If I Don't Feel Comfortable Being "Sexy"?

Then don't be. Seriously. There is no requirement that your boudoir session involve lingerie, seductive poses, or anything else that makes you uncomfortable.

Maybe your version of confidence looks like:

  • an oversized band tee

  • a leather jacket

  • a favorite sweater

  • your partner's shirt

  • jeans and nothing else

  • a gorgeous robe

  • dramatic makeup

  • bare skin

  • fishnets

  • Doc Martens

  • tattoos

  • glitter

  • absolutely fucking nothing you've seen on Pinterest

Your session should be built around what makes you feel good, not what you think a boudoir session is "supposed" to look like.

Boudoir Doesn't Have to Be for Someone Else

I think this is one of the most beautiful reasons people book boudoir. You don't need an anniversary or a wedding or even a partner. You don't need to give the photos to somebody else or show them to anybody at all.

Sometimes the reason is simply: "I want pictures of myself that I actually love."

Maybe…

  •  You're celebrating a birthday.

  • You've made it through a difficult year.

  • You've left a bad relationship (hell yeah, proud of you)

  • You've started a new chapter.

  • You want to change your relationship with your body.

Maybe you're just fucking proud of yourself. Or maybe you woke up one morning and thought: "You know what? I want to feel hot."

That's reason enough.

What Actually Happens During a Boudoir Session?

Here's the part where I tell you that you are not going to walk into my studio and immediately be expected to strip down and start posing.

Absolutely the fuck not.

Your session starts with getting comfortable. We'll talk and get to know each other. We'll go over what you're comfortable with and the vibe you're going for. We’ll go through your outfits together. Then I'll guide you through the session.

I don't expect you to know how to pose or know what looks good on camera. I don't expect you to magically become a professional model the second you walk through the door.

I'll demonstrate poses. I'll give you direction. I'll make adjustments. I'll hype you up. And if something doesn't feel right? We fucking change it. Your comfort matters more than getting a particular shot. Always.

You Get to Decide What Your Boudoir Session Means

Maybe your session is…

  • Sexy

  • Romantic

  • Playful

  • Emotional

  • Celebrating your body

  • Confident

Maybe it's simply an excuse to wear the outfit you've been hiding in the back of your closet. There doesn't have to be one profound reason. You don't owe anybody a justification for wanting beautiful photos of yourself.

Ready to See Yourself Differently?

If you've been thinking about booking a boudoir session but you're worried that you're "not sexy enough," "not confident enough," or just not sure what boudoir is supposed to look like...

Good. You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to be willing to show up as yourself and I'll help with the rest.

Whether you want soft and romantic, dark and moody, alternative and edgy, playful and colorful, or something we've never fucking seen before, we'll create a session that's yours.

You don't have to become somebody else to deserve beautiful photographs.

You just have to show up.
